Toohois offers comprehensive adult learners course diary throughout the year. From beginners sewing to advanced pattern cutting.
Based at our studios in Bedminster, students are be guided through the various courses by professional and welcoming teacher Eva Thyghoj. Check out our range of popular classes below in sewing and pattern cutting.
Alongside our fashion school, we manage six studio spaces for textile and fabric artists & designers.
Our aim was to provide tools and spaces to help with production and efficiency to Bristol's fashion industry. Members have access to an industrial rotary cutter and cutting table they can freely use.
Places are limited but if you are interested in joining our textile studios please get in contact.
INDUSTRY LEVEL COURSES
Toohois industry level course's are aimed at those who wish to pursue a career in the fashion industry or want to develop their skills to a professional level.
A variety of subjects are taught in small classes where attendees will focus on developing existing skills and talents, by pushing their ability and gaining a deeper understanding of whats needed to thrive and succeed in the fashion industry.
The smaller class size enables teachers to work closely with attendees, going deeper into subjects and providing a hands on approach.
Replica a pattern day course
Great introduction to Pattern Cutting. Gain an understanding of how your chosen garment hangs and looks by creating a pattern of your garment. On this course we will learn how to turn an all ready exciting garment or two into a pattern without taking it apart. Learn about seam allowances, faces, necklines & pockets. No prior knowledge of pattern cutting is needed for this course. Some sewing knowledge is essential. You would need to bring a garment to the first session
making and styling pattern blocks
On this course we will learn how to make a block patterns tailor made to fit your measurements and shape. Once the Blocks are made they can then be used to turn into different styles, on the course we will learn the most frequently used methods for turning a block into your own style and design. No prior knowledge of pattern cutting is needed for this course. Some sewing knowledge is essential.
Learn how to grade your pattern into different sizes. want to turn your pattern into a different sizes. This course is suitable for small business who want to make and sell clothing for a living as well as individuals who make their own clothes and would like a more in depth knowledge of how sizing works. You would need to bring a pattern. Card and paper available to purchase or bring your own. Not suitable for beginners.

Intermediate Sewing & Pattern Cutting
Has your sewing reaching a stumbling block? Is it time to gain the skills and confidence to move forward with your projects. Learn to create your own dressmaking or craft items. Explore the different methods of pattern cutting, how to replicate a style, and what's needed to design your own garments to a high standard. From pattern to completion, the tutor will support your learning and get you to the next level of sewing. Students are welcome to set their own projects or draw upon the tutors skills & experience to pinpoint what they need to move forward. A good knowledge of sewing is required for this class.
By popular demand we offer a weekly meet up and do some sewing. You can work on a number of projects from crafts, like cushions and bags, to simple items of clothing. With the options to learn about zips, buttonholes and other sewing techniques, you can set your own project or draw from the tutors wealth of knowledge and experience. The tutor is there to help and support you with developing your confidence, knowledge base and sewing skills Please note this is a higher number class with 6- 9 students.
Make your own sustainable products
With increasing pressure to reduce the amount of household waste we create, learn what you can do to reduce your footprint and help the environment. On this workshop you will learn how to make a number of different house hold items, such as kitchen wipes, make up wipes, washing up sponges, produce bags. We will talk through the best fabrics to use for each product, and learn the skills to make your own household products. You reduce the amount of waste introduced into your home, and by recycling old fabrics you reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.

Making a Jersey skirt
Want to increase the range of fabrics you can choose from? Thought making with jersey but was unsure about how to sew stretchy fabrics? This course will teach you the skills, knowledge and confidence to sew a jersey skirt. You will learn about jersey and the different skills needed to use it and how it differs from other fabrics. What are the design rules, learn about multi-way stretch, the different approach to sewing jersey and sewing stretch fabric to line up patterns. We will cover jersey stitching and overlocking, self bindings and other finishes for jersey. Some previous knowledge of sewing essential on the course. Please bring 1 meter of jersey fabric.

Starting a fashion business: part 1
want to design, make (outsource) and sell clothes. Do you have some great ideas for designing your own clothes and would like to set up your own business, then this course may be for you. We will design and plan a mini collection, covering design and inspiration, illustration, presentation, work sketches, fabric sourcing and size charts. As well as covering what to expect and look out for using outworkers and factories.

Starting a fashion business: part 2
want to design, make/outsource and sell clothes. For students having some sewing skills and graduated part 1) Having designed your mini collection we will make a pattern and a garment sample ready to take to outworkers or factories, complete with a work sketch and size chart. We will learn how to do garment costings and to set yourself margins and targets for you collection.
